By the time they’d packed and stacked the last box, it was after five and all Ivy wanted to do was crawl into a hot shower and stay there for an hour. Every inch of her exposed skin felt as if it was covered in a layer of grime from handling the dusty books, and she’d sneezed so much she was sure her nose must be glowing. Now the shop area was cleared, it needed a thorough clean before the carpenters Alex had hired came in the following week to take down the shelves and repair and polish the floor. They were taking the shelves back to their workshop to strip and paint the ones Alex was keeping, and had offered to keep the rest in return for a discount on their bill.

‘What time do you want me in tomorrow?’ she asked Alex as he double-checked the back door was secured for the night.

‘It’s been a long day, so not too early. I think Nerissa has plans for a cooked breakfast to set us up for the day, so about ten, if that suits you?’

‘Sounds good,’ she agreed, already thinking about the lie-in she could have. As she waited for him to lock the front door behind them, a thought occurred to her. It was Saturday night and the first one in weeks when they wouldn’t be watching a movie and chatting over FaceTime. They’d moved on from the Dan Brown adaptations and had been taking it in turns to choose something to watch. ‘It’ll be weird not talking to you later.’ When he frowned, she realised she’d had the first part of the conversation in her head so no wonder he looked confused. ‘Saturday night is movie night…’

‘Oh! Yeah, it completely slipped my mind. Whose turn was it to pick?’ The knowing grin he gave her said he knew it was her turn but was trying to cheat anyway.

‘Mine! You made me watch The Waterboy last time, remember? I’m not sure I trust you to choose again.’

‘Adam Sandler is a comedy genius,’ Alex huffed, before giving her a sly grin. ‘His worst film would still be better than whatever romcom nonsense you are planning on foisting on me.’

Ivy was having none of that. ‘Who was the one sniffling at the end of Dumplin’?’ she scoffed, giving his arm a little nudge.

‘I had something in my eye!’ Alex protested. ‘Hay fever season must’ve started early.’

The trees and hedgerows around the village were in full bloom and yet she’d not heard a single sneeze from him. ‘Do you even get hay fever?’

He shrugged. ‘Maybe?’

God, he was such an idiot. Her smile drooped as she realised this was the end of their banter for the evening rather than just the start of it. ‘It seems a bit daft to FaceTime when you’re five minutes down the road.’

Alex shoved the bundle of keys in his pocket with a sigh. ‘And the odds on me being able to hide upstairs without Max barging in every five minutes is highly unlikely.
